‘What happens online doesn't stay online: Love and death in virtual worlds"
Abstract:
The increasing
amount of time that people spend online necessitates a greater understanding of
how online and offline life intersect. In this talk I will discuss the
results of a series of surveys which take phenomena that have been extensively
studied offline (falling in love, generating emotional attachments, group
membership, being faced with the prospect of our own mortality) and examine how
these operate online. I conclude by arguing that discriminating between online
and offline selves in all but the crudest terms, that of corporeal presence, is
of little or no use.
